Book 1 : Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone
This is not my favourite in the series, though it is (as they all are), a brilliant book.
Harry Potter, an orphan, brought up by his aunt and uncle who make him live in the cupboard under the stairs, suddenly begins to get letters. His aunt and uncle burn them so he doesn't get them. The letters keep coming, every possible way: down the chimney, through the windows, under the door, even inside the eggs for breakfast! Harry's uncle drives the whole family away, to escape from the mysterious letters, and they stay in a hut on a rock in the middle of the sea. Then, in the middle of the night on Harry's eleventh birthday, a giant comes and tells Harry that he's a wizard! Harry goes to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, where he makes friends (and enemies), fights trolls, and learns spells and potions. However, soon he finds out that a Philosphers Stone is being hidden inside the school, and is sure that his potions teacher (Professor Snape) is trying to steal the stone, so that Voldemort, the Dark Wizard who murdered Harry's parents, can come back to power. Struggling through a series of difficult obstacles, he and his friends reach the stone, but someone else has got there first and it isn't Snape...
